Robots, VR, and Big Ideas: FLASS Scholars Wow LTE 2026

The Learning and Teaching Expo 2026 (LTE 2026) was held by the Smart City Consortium from 24 to 26 June 2026 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Under this year’s theme “Reimagining Education: Human-Centric, Future-Ready”, the expo offered a revitalised experience for the education community. It was presented by Hong Kong Education City, and supported by the Education Bureau of HKSAR.

LTE 2026 connected educators, leaders, and innovators worldwide with insights into teaching practices, technology integration, and engagement strategies. The expo also encouraged collaboration and mutual learning among stakeholders. At the EdUHK pavilion, FLASS presented research shaping the future of learning and teaching. FLASS scholars were also invited to share their perspectives on the applications of technology in education under the year’s theme.

Dr Paul Choi of the Department of Science and Environmental Studies (SES) discusses how digital technology is changing science learning goals and teaching methods.

In his presentation, Dr Gary Chow Chi-ching of the Department of Health and Physical Education (HPE) explored how contemporary technologies are supporting future talent development in sports and physical education. He explained how assistive technologies can support skill analysis and improve elite performance in sports training.

Dr Paul Choi Tat-shing of the Department of Science and Environmental Studies (SES) outlined the changes in learning objectives and pedagogical approaches in science education amid the rapid advancement of digital technology. By citing examples from various science topics, he guided the audience to reflect on the role of digital tools in science teaching and shared practical strategies in response to the digital wave.

Professor Song Yanjie of the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology (MIT) shares her perspective on how generative AI-powered immersive learning environments can advance next-generation pedagogical innovation.

In her talk, Professor Song Yanjie of the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology (MIT) shared her visionary perspectives on how generative AI-powered immersive learning environments can propel next-generation pedagogical innovation. She presented three new platforms developed by her team: Learningverse, LearningverseVR, and Embodyverse.

“While Learningverse, a web-based 3D metaverse, can enable interactive, collaborative learning with AI-powered digital humans, LearningverseVR extends these capabilities into virtual reality (VR) with intelligent agents that personalise learning and boost engagement. Embodyverse, which embodies AI-driven robots in mixed reality (MR), offers real-time, adaptive guidance for collaborative learning,” the professor said.

Apart from these individual presentations under the Pedagogy and Curriculum session,, several MIT scholars also shared their expert views alongside other speakers on the application of AI in education. Together, their presentations showed how technology can support a more engaging and effective approach to education and highlighted FLASS’s leadership in integrating advanced technologies to create human-centric, future-ready educational experiences.
